good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen:
when i was in the primary school, i have a dream. i want to invent a device which could bring you from one place to another in no time at all. when i was in the secondary school, my dream was to study in my ideal university. and when eventually i got into the university, my dream was to graduate.
how pathetic! when we grow up, we dream less and become more realistic. why? why do we have to change our dreams, so, so in order to let it be "fulfilled"? why do we have to surrender to the so-called "reality"? what is the reality actually?
ladies and gentlemen, the reality is not real. it is a barrier keeping us from all the possible fantasies. flying, for e_ample, had been a dream to mankind for thousands of years. a hundred years ago, "man could not fly" was still regarded as the "reality". now if that was really the reality, what did the wright brothers do? how did some of you get to macau? only when we believe that the reality is not real can we soar with our dreams.

building bridges for the future
i’m studying in a city that’s famous for its walls. people who visit my city are amazed at the imposing sight of its walls, especially when silhouetted against the setting sun with gold, shining streaks. the old, cracked bricks are covered with lichens and the walls are weather-beaten guards standing still for centuries.
our ancestors liked to build walls. they built walls in beijing, _i’an, nanjing and many other cities, and they built the great wall, which snakes across half our country. they built walls to protect against enemies and evil spirits. this tradition has survived to this day: we still have many parks and schools walled off from the public.
for a long time, walls were one of the most natural things in the world to me.
my perceptions, however, changed after i made a hiking trip to the eastern suburbs of my city. my classmates and i were walking with some foreign students. as we walked out of the city, we found ourselves flanked by tall trees, which formed a wide canopy above our heads. suddenly one foreign student asked me, "where is the entrance to the eastern suburbs?"
"we’re already in the eastern suburbs," i replied. he seemed taken aback, "i thought you chinese had walls for everything." his remark set off a heated debate. at one point, he likened our walled cities to "jails", while i insisted that the eastern suburbs were one of the many places in china that had no walls.
that debate had no winners, but i did learn a lot from this student. for instance, he told me that some major universities like o_ford and cambridge were not surrounded by walls. i have to admit that we do have many walls in china, and as we develop our country, we must look carefully at them and decide whether they are physical or intangible. we will keep some walls but tear down those that impede our development.
let me give another e_ample.
a year ago, when i was working on a term paper, i needed a book on business law and found a copy in the law school library. however, the librarian coldly rejected my request to borrow it, saying, "you can’t borrow this book, you’re not a student here." in the end, i had to spend 200 yuan to buy a copy. meanwhile, the copy in the law school gathered dust on the shelf.
at the beginning of this semester, i heard that my university had started to think of unifying its libraries and linking them to libraries at other universities, so my e_perience wouldn’t be repeated. barriers would be replaced by bridges. an inter-library loan system would give us access to books from any library. with globalization and china integrated into the world, i believe many of these intangible walls will be knocked down.
i know that globalization is a controversial issue, and it is hard to say whether it is good or bad. but one thing is for sure: it draws our attention to china’s tangible and intangible walls and forces us to e_amine their role in the modern world.
and how about the ancient walls of mine and other cities? should we tear them down? definitely not. my city, like beijing and other cities, is actually making a great effort to preserve the walls. these walls attract historians, archaeologists, and many schoolchildren who are trying to study our history and cultural heritage. walls have become bridges to our past and to the rest of the world. if the ancient builders of these walls were still alive today, they would be proud to see such great changes in the role of their walls. they are now bridges that link east and west, south and north, and all countries of the world. our cultural heritage will survive globalization.

cherish what we are enjoying
it is a report about the new planet which holds possibility for life.
it shows that european astronomers have discovered a new planet, they name it gliese 581 c.
it is about 20.5 light years from our earth. they estimated the planet"s average temperature at between 0 and 40 degrees centigrade. it is orbiting the red dwarf star, gliese 581.
most important of all, it’s an earth-like planet. there might be mountin, sea and liquid water.
so the astronomers believe that it is potentially habitable.
however, gliese 581 c might be "tidally locked" to it’s sun-the dwarf star the way our moon is to the earth.
it means that it must always show its same face to its sun, and that while one side would be too fiercely hot to support life, the other side would be too cold.
this report makes me to realize that how valuable our earth is.
everyday, we can see sunrise and sunset.

ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls,
i am chinese. i am proud of being a chinese with five thousand years of civilization behind. i"ve learned about the four great inventions made by our forefathers. i"ve learned about the great wall and the yangtze river. i"ve learned about zhang heng(張衡)and i"ve learned about zheng he(鄭和).who says the yellow river civilization has vanished(消失)?i know that my ancestors have made miracles(奇跡)on this fertile land and we"re still making miracles. who can ignore the fact that we have established ourselves as a great state in the world, that we have devised our own nuclear weapons, that we have successfully sent our satellites into space, and that our gnp ranks no. 7 in the world? we have e_perienced the plunders (掠奪) by other nations, and we have e_perienced the war. yet, based on such ruins, there still stands our nation----china, unyielding and unconquerable!
i once came across an american tourist. she said, "china has a history of five thousand years, but the us only has a history of 200 years. five thousand years ago, china took the lead in the world, and now it is the us that is leading."my heart was deeply touched by these words. it is true that we"re still a developing nation, but it doesn"t mean that we can despise (鄙視) ourselves. we have such a long-standing history, we have such abundant resources, we have such intelligent and diligent people, and we have enough to be proud of. we have reasons to say proudly: we are sure to take the lead in the world in the future again, for our problems are big, but our ambition (雄心) is even bigger, our challenges (挑戰(zhàn)) are great, but our will is even greater.

6.realize the audience is on your side.
7.concentrate on your message.
8.rack up e_perience.
9.observe other speakers.

11.grab the audience"s attention.
12.have one main message.
13.tell stories.
14.develop your own style.
15.avoid filler words.
"basically", "well", and "um"這些詞對你的演講毫無意義。
16.vary your tone, volume, and speed.
17.make the audience laugh.
18.find a friendly face.
19.don"t apologize.
20.smile.

honorable judges, ladies and gentlemen:
today my topic is ’nuclear power: a blessing or a disaster?’
when the first atomic bomb was dropped on hiroshima, japan, the world was thrust into atomic age. meanwhile in the commence of cold war and during its long term, it had set the world into fear and panic of nuclear war many times.
but over the years, nuclear power has found its way to promote goodness for humankind .it promises to provide clean and efficient energy for the centuries to come.
so whether nuclear power a blessing or a disaster?
there is no firm answer for this question from my own perspective.
ladies and gentlemen, my very initial contact with nuclear power was from a tv programme called green space where i saw for the first time how nuclear power had changed people’s lives and what it had left for the residents’ living around chyrnobil nuclear power plant. unfortunately, it was a sad story.
my heart sank when i saw a boy infant appear on the screen smiling with big blue sparkling eyes. he was so cute and adorable just like all the other kids but he was blinded. what’s more, he had to receive medical treatment everyday to alleviate radiation damage, but still stood little chance of growing up. later i learned that inappropriate operation and equipment design defect was responsible for the tradegy .eight years has past, but the picture of that boy’s smile still appears infront of me and reminds me that nuclear power can be a living devil.
however, with the increasing depletion of resources and the instant demand for energy, clean and efficient nuclear power may seem the best choice.
as an old saying goes ’every sword has two blades.’ nuclear power is dangerous, yet efficient; environmental devastated yet clean; e_pensive yet sustainable. it is a matter of how we use and how we treat it. while let’s beyond all this ,whether nuclear power a blessing or a disaster, it’s ours’ choice.
thank you for listening!

honorable judges and dear fellow students,
just as most people here, when i first saw the topic reform and opening-up policies,a voice came out, saying what a grand scale!then those big events, such as china"s accession to wto,the launch of shenzhou and the submersion of jiaolong flashed through my mind.however,at this moment i stand on the stage as a member of chinese youth,i"m not gonna draw a magnificent blueprint for you.what i e_actly want is to find out the relation between chinese youth and this era of reform and opening-up.
it is known to all that in the past 40 years, china has captured the opportunity provided by globalization and grown rapidly from nobody to the second-largest economy in the world.in this conte_t,it could be said that we young people have had better resources than ever before.to be more specific, let"s pick up some daily life"s fragments: for e_ample,one sunday morning, you don"t feel like going outside,so you pull out your smartphone and quickly order a takeout on app to comfort your empty stomach.in another case ,there"s been a discount on taobao .after struggling with your equipment and the net speed, you finally got your favorite goods at the best prize, because the most complete supply chain and logistic chain worldwide will solve the remaining work for you,so all you have to do is waiting. not to mention the increasing number of people going abroad, with a chinese passport, they are entitled to travel around the world and come back home safely.
but now i wonder how many of you have realized that this convenience, this sense of security does"t come out of air, surely we could regard it as the product of reform and opening-up policies, nevertheless,do you really understand what are behind those achievements?there is a saying, if you live at ease , that is because there are a great many people who are working for you in silence.they might be the politicians and entrepreneurs who climb into the raging flow to e_plore and promote the system construction of market economy, they might be the intellectuals who devote their lives to prompting the engine of development, and they might be every single person we have access to.
in other words,we youth do not take it for granted, the more resources we possess means the more responsibility we will shoulder.when the 95s were claimed to be the new youth in china and the first millennial stepped into campus, baton of the era has also been approaching.although china is moving firmly towards its goal of rejuvenation ,deficiencies and problems still e_ist.so in this sense,we youth ought to grow stronger to sustain the potentiality of development.with the baton in hands,do not afraid to embrace the mercurial society ,do not afraid to change the future.so that as the new youth we could feel more emboldened to say that facing the reform and opening-up policies we are not only the gainers but also the successors!thank you!

reform and opening-up : dare to embrace the world
good afternoon everyone, my name is jack. it’s my great privilege to stand here and share my own perspective about 40 years’ reform and opening-up.
through the long history of china, reform is easy to witness. some reforms just shifted the rulers’ name yet had little influence on the society. others, however, can be revolutionary and our reform and opening-up policy is one of them.
born in 21st century, it is hard to have the e_act feeling about the life before 1978.luckily, i can grasp some information from my parents and my grandparents.
on a personal note, the most impressive change that has occurred during the 40 years is people’s concept of living, or to be specific, the concept of allocating their salary. for instance, elder people like my grandparents always cut off their monthly budget and then save the surplus money into the bank account. while young adults are more likely to use the remaining salary to do some investment or with the loan if necessary. i did ask my grandparents why not follow suit, they told me it had risks that they didn’t want to take. apparently, we stand in this period and all know that such kind of trade and investment is helpful to the economy ascent. thanks to mr. deng’s policy, we can now dare to trade both domestically and internationally.
beside economy, swift development in other aspects is also prodigious. as you can see, skyscrapers stand in the city and huts are no more. cars take the main avenue and bikes step aside. various travel modes are available for common civilians. imagine, what kind of condition we may live in if the reform and opening-up policy is absent? do you want to live in the condition that was similar to forty years ago. ok, back to the point, when mentioning transportation, you all know what i am going to talk about is our high speed-rail whose both speed and technology top all over the world. dating back to 40 years ago, it is nearly impossible for people to imagine such changes can literally take place. due to the reform and opening-up, i can now jump out of the well and embrace the world. flash as 40 years may be, we indeed witness and e_perience the happiness that the reform and opening-up has brought us.
therefore, as a freshman, it is my duty and also our duty to be e_plicit about our directions and master adequate professional knowledge which will be the basis of our contributions to the community and creating harmonious environment for the ne_t generation. do not be afraid that your contribution may not be considered as innovative as deng _iao pin did, because it is the little parts that you have done that build up the world we live in today.
in the end, i have to say that reform and opening-up is a great fortune for every chinese. owing to the window it opens for us, i can now embrace the world.
that’s all. thank you.

long long ago, in a land far away, there lived a beautiful young girl.
she was very sad. because her mother had died and her father had married again. his new wife had two ugly daughters, esmerelda and griselda
soon after, her father also died and life immediately(立即) changed for the girl.
"you will be our servant(仆人), "said her stepmother(繼母). "you will do everything we say."
"you must sleep in the kitchens." said the stepsisters.
there she had to do hard work from morning until evening, get up before daybreak(黎明), carry water, make the fires, cook, and wash. besides(除了) this, the sisters did everything imaginable(可以想象) to hurt her. they made fun of her. in the evening when she had worked herself weary(厭倦), there was no bed for her. instead she had to sleep by the hearth in the ashes(灰). and because she always looked dusty(塵土飛揚) and dirty, they called her cinderella.
"there are cinders(煤渣) all over your clothes!" e_claimed(喊叫) the stepmother. " cinderella. that"s your new name. clear these things away, cinderella."
"cinderella! cinderella!" esmerelda and griselda said. "oh, how clever you are, mama!"
one day, an invitation(邀請) arrived from the palace.
"girls, listen to this," said the stepmother. cinderella was serving(準備) the breakfast. she listened as her stepmother read the invitation.
"the king is having a ball," she said e_citedly(興奮). "he is looking for a wife for the prince! oh, my dears, this is wonderful. he will probably choose one of you, but it will be such a hard choice to make.
"am i invited too, stepmother?" asked cinderella.
"you! certainly(當然) not!" e_claimed(驚呼) her stepmother. "the thought of such a thing. a scruffy servant(破舊的仆人) going to a ball, when only beautiful ladies are invited!"
"hah! hah!" laughed the stepsisters. "beautiful! that doesn"t include you, cinderella!"
"you may help my two lovely girls to get ready," said her stepmother.
"oh," said cinderella
"we shall all have new dresses, girls, and we shall go shopping today. clear away these things, cinderella."
"oh, i wish i could go to the ball," thought(認為) cinderella.
the day of the ball arrived and the whole day was spent preparing esmerelda and griselda. cinderella did her best to make the sisters look pretty, but it was an impossible task.
finally, the coach arrived to collect the girls and their mother.
cinderella was very tired and she wandered back to the kitchens.
"oh, i did so want to go," she sighed(嘆氣) as she sat down by the fire.
"what"s to stop you?" asked a voice(聲音).
"who"s that?" asked cinderella, looking around.
"i"m here by the door." a strange woman walked up to cinderella. "i heard you the other day, wishing you could go to the ball. well, the ball is this evening, and you"re going."
"but how?" asked cinderella. "what can you do?"
"anything i want to," said the woman. "i"m your fairy(仙女) godmother, and i"m here to send you to the ball.
she sat down.
"come now," she said. "dry those tears(擦干眼淚). we have work to do. i need a large pumpkin(南瓜), two mice(老鼠) and a frog. can you find these?"
"yes," said cinderella, mystified(迷惑) by the request(請求).
"off you go, then."
when cinderella found all the things, her fairy godmother took them all outside.
"now for the magic," she said. she waved(揮舞) her hands and the air began to twinkle(閃爍) and sparkle(閃光). the pumpkin began to grow and change, until standing there was a coach.
the mice changed into two fine footmen(步兵), the frog into the driver, and the rats(老鼠) into two beautiful horses to pull the coach.
cinderella clapped(拍) her hands. "it"s beautiful!" she cried.
"in you get," said her fairy godmother.
"but i can"t go like this," said cinderella.
"like what?" asked the fairy godmother. "you look lovely to me."
cinderella looked at herself. while the magic had been working on the pumpkin, it had also been working on her. instead of her ragged(破爛) dress she wore a beautiful ball gown(晚禮服), with glass slippers(玻璃鞋) on her feet.
"oh, fairy godmother," said cinderella. "it"s lovely. how can i thank you?"
"by going to the ball," said the fairy godmother. "off you go, but remember, the magic stops working at midnight(午夜). everything will change back then. now go and enjoy yourself."
"good-bye, fairy godmother," called cinderella, as the coach swept off.
cinderella arrived at the palace(皇宮) and walked into the ballroom. everyone stopped and stared(看著).
"who is she?" people asked, including her stepmother and stepsisters.
the prince saw her, and had eyes for no one else for the rest of the evening. cinderella danced only with the prince(王子), and as the evening passed, he fell in love with her.
a clock chiming(報時) reminded cinderella of her fairy godmother"s warning(警告). "it must be eleven o"clock," she thought(告知), but she asked the prince. "what time is it?"
"almost midnight," he answered.
"oh, no!" cried cinderella. "i must go!"
"you can"t. not now," said the prince.
"i must." and cinderella swept out of the room, and ran out of the palace. as she ran, the clock finished chiming. cinderella"s clothes changed back into rags(破布), and the coach and horses were nowhere to be seen.
the prince tried to follow, but he couldn"t catch up. when he reached(走到) the door, all he found was one glass slipper. he ran to the main door.
"was a beautiful girl just driven(趕) out of here?" he asked the guard(士兵).
"no, your highness. i"ve only seen a scruffy servant(邋遢的仆人) girl," the guard answered.
"i"ve lost her," said the prince, and he returned sadly to the palace.
the ne_t morning, cinderella"s stepmother and stepsisters were talking about the ball.
the prince meanwhile(同時) decided to look for the mysterious(神秘) girl he had fallen in love with. he issued(發(fā)表) a proclamation(公告). "whoever the glass shoe fits(合適), shall be wife to the prince."
the prince and his footman(仆人) went from house to house of all the ladies invited to the ball.
he finally arrived at the stepmother"s house.
"it"s my shoe!" cried esmerelda, trying desperately(穿) to pull the shoe on.
"please, miss!" said the footman. "your foot is too big. you will break the slipper(玻璃鞋)."
griselda tried the shoe, but her toes were far too long.
"is there anyone else?" asked the prince.
"there"s only cinderella, the maid(女仆)," said the stepmother. "but she wasn"t even at the ball."
"all the ladies in the kingdom(王國) must try the slipper," said the footman.
cinderella was called from the kitchen. esmerelda and griselda laughed when they saw how dirty she was. but their laughter turned to tears when they saw cinderella"s foot slide easily into the slipper.
"oh!" they cried. "it fits!"
the prince looked at cinderella and realised that she was the girl that he had fallen in love with.
cinderella took the other slipper from her pocket(口袋) and put it on.
the prince was happy to have found her, and on a bright sunny day, he and cinderella were married. they lived happily ever after.

a scene to remember
gu qiubei
shanghai international studies university
advisor: gong longsheng
good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen.
today i would like to begin with a story.
there was once a physical therapist(臨床醫(yī)學家) who traveled all the way from america to africa to do a census(調(diào)查) about mountain gorillas(大猩猩). these gorillas are a main attraction to tourists from all over the world; this put them severely under threat of poaching(偷獵) and being put into the zoo. she went there out of curiosity, but what she saw strengthened her determination to devote her whole life to fighting for those beautiful creatures. she witnessed a scene, a scene taking us to a place we never imaged we"ve ever been, where in the very depth of the african rainforest, surrounded by trees, flowers and butterflies, the mother gorillas cuddled(擁抱) their babies.
yes, that"s a memorable scene in one of my favorite movies, called gorillas in the mist, based on a true story of mrs. dian fossey, who spent most of bet lifetime in rwanda to protect the eco-environment there until the very end of her life.
to me, the movie not only presents an unforgettable scene but also acts as a timeless(永恒的) reminder that we should not develop the tourist industry at the cost of our eco-environment.
today, we live in a world of prosperity but still threatened by so many new problems. on the one hand, tourism, as one of the most promising industries in the 21st century, provides people with the great opportunity to see everything there is to see and to go any place there is to go. it has become a lifestyle for some people, and has turned out to be the driving force in gdp growth. it has the magic to turn a backward town into a wonderland of prosperity. but on the other hand, many problems can occur---natural scenes aren"t natural anymore. deforestation to heat lodges is devastating nepal. oil spills from tourist boats are polluting antarctica. tribal people are forsaking their native music and dress to listen to u2 on walkman and wear nike and reeboks.
all these appalling(令人震驚的) facts have brought us to the realization that we can no longer stand by and do nothing, because the very thought of it has been eroding(侵蝕) our resources. encouragingly, the e_plosive growth of global travel has put tourism again in the spotlight, which is why the united nations has made 2002 the year of ecotourism, for the first time to bring to the world"s attention the benefits of tourism, but also its capacity to destroy our eco-environment.
now every year, many local ecoenvironmental protection organizations an: receiving donations--big notes, small notes or even coins--from housewives, plumbers(水管工人), ambulance drivers, salesmen, teachers, children and invalids(殘疾人), some of them can not afford to send the money but they do. these are the ones who drive the cabs, who nurse in hospitals, who are suffering from ecological damage in their neighborhood. why? because they care, because they still want their mother nature back. because they know it still belongs to them.
this kind of feeling that i have, ladies and gentlemen, is when it feels like it, smells like it, and looks like it, it"s all coming from a scene to remember, a scene to recall and to cherish.
the other night, as l saw the moon linger over the land and before it was sent into the invisible, my mind was filled with songs. i found myself humming softly, not to the music, but to some- thing else, someplace else. a place remembered, a place untouched, a field of grass where no one seem to have been e_cept the deer.
and all those unforgettable scenes strengthened the feeling that it"s lime for us to do something, for our own and our coming generation.
once again, i have come to think of mrs. dian fossey be- cause it"s with her spirit, passion, courage and strong sense of our eco-environment that we are taking our ne_t step into the world.
and no matter who we are what we do and where we go, in our mind, there"s always a scene to remember, a scene worth our effort to protect it and fight for it. thank you very much.
the doors that are open to us
good morning ladies and gentlemen:
the title of my speech today is "the doors that are open to us ".
the other day my aunt paid me a visit. she was overjoyed. "i got the highest mark in the mid-term e_amination!" she said. don"t be surprised! my aunt is indeed a student; to be e_act, a college student at the age of 45.
last year, she put aside her private business and signed up for a one-year, full-time management course in a college. "this was the wisest decision i have ever made," she said proudly like a teenage girl. to her, college is always a right place to pick up new ideas, and new ideas always make her feel young.

to me march 28th was a lucky day. it was on that particular evening that i found myself at central stage, in the spotlight. winning the "21st century·ericsson cup" seventh national english speaking competition is a memory that i shall treasure and one that will surely stay.
more important than winning the cup is the friendship that has been established and developed among the contestants, and the chance to communicate offstage in addition to competing onstage. also the competition helps boost public speaking in china, a skill hitherto undervalued.
for me, though, the competition is a more personal e_perience. habitually shy, i had been reluctant to take part in any such activities. encouraged by my friends, however, i made a last-minute decision to give it a try. in the course of preparation i somehow rediscovered myself, a truer me.
i found that, after all, i like communicating with other people; that e_changing views can be so much fun—and so much rewarding, both emotionally and intellectually; that public speaking is most effective when you are least guarded; and that it is essential to success in every walk of life.
at a more practical level, i realized knowing what you are going to say and how you are going to say it are equally important. to take the original ideas out of your head and transplant them, so to speak, to that of others, you need to have an organized mind. this ability improves with training.
yet there should not be any loss or addition or distortion in the process. those ideas that finally find their waysintosanother head need to be recognizably yours. language is a means to transmit information, not a means to obstruct communication. it should be lucid to be penetrating.
in china, certain public speaking skills have been unduly emphasized. will it really help, we are compelled to ask, to bang at the podium or yell at the top of your lungs, if you have come with a poorly organized speech, a muddled mind, and unwillingness to truly share your views?
above all, the single most important thing i learnt was that as a public speaker, you need to pay attention, first and foremost, to the content of your speech. and second, the structure of your speech: how one idea relates and progresses to another.
only after these come delivery and non-verbal communication: speed control, platform manner, and so on. pronunciation is important, yet of greater importance is this: is your language competent enough to e_press your ideas e_actly the way you intend them to be understood?
i was informed afterwards that i was chosen to be the winner for my "appropriately worded speech, e_cellent presence and quick-witted response". in so remarking, the judges clearly showed their preference: they come to listen for meaningful ideas, not for loose judgments, nor easy laughters.
some contestants failed to address their questions head on. some were able to, but did not knowswheresto stop—the dragging on betrayed their lack of confidence. the root cause was that they did not listen attentively to the questions. or they were thinking of what they had prepared.
as i said in my speech, "it is vitally important that we young people do more serious thinking ... to take them [issues like globalization] on and give them honest thinking is the first step to be prepared for both opportunities and challenges coming our way". we need to respond honestly.
a competition like this draws talented students from all over the country. and of course, i learnt more things than just about public speaking. since in the final analysis, public speaking is all about effective communication. and this goes true for all communications, whatever their setting.
and the following is the final version of my speech:
globalization:
opportunities and challenges
for china"s younger generation
thirty years ago, american president richard ni_on made an epoch-making visit to china, a country still isolated at that time. premier zhou enlai said to him, "your handshake came over the vastest ocean in the world—twenty-five years of no communication". thirty years since, china and america have e_changed many handshakes. the fundamental implication of this e_ample is that the need to communicate across differences in culture and ideology is not only felt by the two countries but by many other nations as well.
as we can see today, environmentalists from different countries are making joint efforts to address the issue of global warming, economists are seeking solutions to financial crises that rage in a particular region but nonetheless cripple the world economy, and politicians and diplomats are getting together to discuss the issue of combating terrorism. peace and prosperity has become a common goal that we are striving for all over the world. underlying this mighty trend of global communication is the echo of e. m. forster"s words "only connect!"
with the it revolution, traditional boundaries of human society fall away. our culture, politics, society and commerce are being sloshedsintosone large melting pot of humanity. in this interlinked world, there are no outsiders, for a disturbance in one place is likely to impact other parts of the globe. we have begun to realize that a world divided cannot endure.
china is now actively integratingsintosthe world. our recent entry to the wto is a good e_ample. for decades, we have taken pride in being self-reliant, but now we realize the importance of participating in and contributing to a broader economic order. from a precarious role in the world arena to our present wto membership, we have come a long way.
but what does the way ahead look like? in some parts of the world people are demonstrating against globalization. are they justified, then, in criticizing the globalizing world? instead of narrowing the gap between the rich and the poor, they say, globalization enables the developed nations to swallow the developing nations" wealth in debts and interest. globalization, they argue, should be about a common interest in every other nation"s economic health.
we are reminded by karl mar_ that capital goes beyond national borders and eludes control from any other entity. this has become a reality. multinational corporations are seeking the lowest cost, the largest market, and the most favourable policy. they are often powerful lobbyists in government decision-making, ruthless e_pansionists in the global market and a devastating presence to local businesses.
for china, still more challenges e_ist. how are we going to ensure a smooth transition from the planned economy to a market-based one? how to construct a legal system that is sound enough and broad enough to respond to the needs of a dynamic society? how to maintain our cultural identity in an increasingly homogeneous world? and how to define greatness in our rise as a peace-loving nation? globalization entails questions that concern us all.
like many young people my age in china, i want to see my country get prosperous and enjoy respect in the international community. but it seems to me that mere patriotism is not just enough. it is vitally important that we young people do more serious thinking and broaden our mind to bigger issues. there might never be easy answers to those issues such as globalization, but to take them on and give them honest thinking is the first step to be prepared for both opportunities and challenges coming our way. this is also one of the thoughts that came to me while preparing this speech.

good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen:
when the topic "people and nature" first caught my eye, i was reminded
of a story about myself and my violin.
i began learning to play the violin when i was eight years old. at
first, it was a very hard thing for me. after my continued efforts, i was
able to play a lot of musical pieces very soon. i felt so proud of myself that i began to behave arrogantly.
my violin teacher noticed this and told me: "to be a good violin player,
you should first of all love and respect your violin. you should obey the
rules of playing it so as to make harmonious melodies. remember, play the
violin not only with your hands, but also with your heart and soul. "
ladies and gentlemen, i believe that nature is to people what my violin

dream what you want to dream,go where you want to go,be what you want to be.because you have only one life and one chance to do all the things you want to do.

a small truth to make life 100%
karamay e_perimental middle school luo jintao
good afternoon, my dear friends and the honorable judges.
i’m very glad to be here and give you my speech. i hope we all can enjoy the time. now, today my topic is: "a small truth to make life 100%".
as a young english teacher, i have to face different kinds of students and deal with trivial things every day. life goes on, but sometimes it’s becoming frustrating and i feel very tired. how to make my life become better? i’m always seeking for the answer. fortunately, when i read a magazine one day, i found the truth to make my life 100%. today i would like to share it with you.
now, my dear friends, let’s do an interesting test together and then you will find the secret by yourself! as we all know, there are 26 alphabets in english, a to z. against them we have the numbers 1% to 26%. if a is equal to 1%, and b to 2%, and so on, until z is equal to 26%, then can you guess what can make our life 100%? that is to say, what can make our life perfect?
some of you may suggest "money". however, after calculating, you’ll find it only comes to 72%. now try a few more. knowledge? yes, knowledge is power! but this time it only comes to 96%. how about love? that only shows at 54%. luck does even worse, only at 47%. though most of us think this is the most important.
then what makes 100%? hard work? closer, 98%. but not e_act. now, what on earth can make life 100%? well, every problem has a solution, only if we perhaps change our attitude. yes! only attitude comes out at 100%.
many of the gifts we have been given have been distributed unfairly. we all wish we had the ability of the talented, the money of the rich, and the luck of the beautiful. but none of these matter. there is only one thing we all have equally and can always control even in the worst situations. and that is our attitude.
life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it. therefore, attitude is the thing that shapes who you are the most.
attitude is everything. now, my dear friends, please give the world a sunshine smile. change your attitude and enjoy every minute in your life.
that’s all. thank you!

there is only one failure called never try
what is success? different people have different ideas.you may say success is the realization of one"s hopesand justified goals.under such notion, however, people have different understanding of success because the hopes and goals they cherish vary from one another.
there may ba so mangy kinds of success in the world that i can"t enumerate them all.so maybe it"s difficult to set a defination for success.but ,in my opinion,it"s easy to define what is failure---there is only one failure called never try.
everyone has his dreams but not all of them dare to make it come true.just like a huter aimed at his game but never fire or a soldier who crying out but never toward.they are afraid of failure that they might encounter.
that reminds me of a game we used to play.we put the chairs in a circle.and the player must pass through th barriers made by the chairs with his eyes covered up.he would be allowed to memorize the positions of the chairs.but as soon as his eyes is covered,we will remove all the chairs.
sometimes, our life is just like such kind of game.we tried our best not to bump against the barriers.but these things turn out to be e_isting only in our minds.and sometimes,we made them for ourselves.we dare not to participate a competition or get cold feet to call the boy or girl we love.it turns out that the barriers we made for ourselves lead to the loss of a lot of things.
don"t give up trying untill you really bump against the chairs.even so,at least you have a place to sit on.
some people would say i tried but i failed to pass an e_am or to find a job.i"am a failure .but on the contrary,i prefer to call these things setbacks instead of failures.there is no failure in a winner "s dictionary.
it doesn"t matter i you have a tumble , what really matters is that you lose the courage to stand up and give it another try.the process is full of tears and pains.
just look back on how we learn to walk when we are young.if we gave up easily, today we may only crawl .if tomas edison gave up easily in finding a proper material to make a bulb, maybe we will live in the darkness after the sunset.perhaps we need some torches to go on with our competition.
i,myself,a shy person by nature who easily suffers from stage fright, had to get up my courage to take part in this speech contest like this.i could have stayed away and had an easy time of it by not coming here.but i chose to accept the challenge and to face the difficulties. now here i am.i will try my best because i know i would broaden my horizon and make a lot of friends here.
i still remember the first time i sang a song at a party ,the first time talking to a foreign friends, the first time made a speech on the platform, etc.although at first they almost scared me to death, but when it was over,i feel it"s worthing trying.there is a saying goes,"people often regret what they didn"t do instead of what they have done."
forrest gump often says,"life is like a bo_ of chacolate ,you never know what you are gonna get." i would say if the chacolate you got is not your favourite.don"t get upset but try the ne_t.

crossing the sea
by liang limin(梁勵敏 北京外國語大學)
good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. the title of my speech today is "crossing the sea" . an english poet by the name of rudyard kipling once wrote in this poem "we and they" :
all the people like us are we
and everyone else is they
we live over the sea
while they live over the way
we eat pork and beef with cow horn-handled knives
they who gobble their rice off a leaf
are horrified out of their lives.
when these lines first caught my eyes, i was shocked--how could two people remain so isolated and ignorant of each other in the past? today′s society, of course, is an entirely different picture. those people who used to eat with gobble their rice might be as well have taken to fish and chips.
indeed, just take china as e_ample; our modern life has been influenced by western style of living in so many ways that it′s no longer surprising to see teenagers going crazy about rock-and-roll, whole families dining out at mcdonald′s and even rather elderly people dressed in apple jeans.
however, these are only some e_pressions of the cultural changes taking place in our society today. what is really going on is a subtle but significant restructuring of the nation′s mentality. just look around.
how many college graduates are ready to compete aggressively for every job opportunity, whereas not long ago they were asked just to sit idle and wait for whatever was to be assigned to them by the government?
how many young people are now eager to seek for an independent life whereas only two decades ago they would rely totally on their parents to arrange for their future? ask anyone who participates in today′s speech contest. who has not come with a will to fight and who has not come determined to achieve self-fulfillment in winning the game? and i′m quite certain that if confucius had lived to see today′s china, he would have been horrified to see young lovers kissing each other in public places in an unreserved e_pression of their passion.
it is therefore evident that we as descendants of an ancient eastern civilization are already living under strong influence of the western culture. but it is not only in china that we find the incorporation of the two cultures.
take the united states as an e_ample: during the 1980s, in face of the overwhelming competition from japan, many american companies such as the ford began to adopt a teamwork management from their rivals, the essence of which, lay at the very core of eastern culture.
take the chinese acupuncture as another e_ample: this traditional treatment of diseases is finally finding its way to the west and hence the underlying notion that illness is resulted from the imbalance between yin and yang within the body--an idea which would strike any westerner as incredible in the past!
ladies and gentlemen, we live in a great epoch when the global integration of economy and the information revolution have brought cultures of the world closer than ever before. we live in a particular era when countries, east and west, find themselves in need of readjusting their traditional values. we live, at the same time, at a critical juncture of our evolution because such problems as ethnic conflicts and regional unrest are increasingly posing a threat to the peace and happiness of the whole human race.to cope with such an era and to embrace an even brighter future, we need to learn to live more harmoniously in a world community which is becoming smaller and smaller. my dear fellow students, our command of the english language render sit possible for us to gain an insight into western culture while retaining our own cultural identity.
therefore, it is our sacred responsibility to promote the cultural e_changes and hence the mutual understanding between china and the rest of the world.
it is my happiest dream that new generation of chinese will not only grow up drinking coca cola and watching hollywood, but also be blessed with the far-reaching benefits of multiple cultures; benefits that our forefathers had never, ever dreamed of.
to end my speech, i would like to quote rudyard kipling again:
all the people like us are we
and everyone else is they
but once you cross over the sea
you will end by looking on we
as only a sort of they.
thank you.
女士們,先生們,我們恰逢一個偉大的時代:全球經(jīng)濟一體化、信息革命使得世界各種文化聯(lián)系比以往更加緊密;
