good morning. on this christmas eve, laura and i send our best wishes to families across america as you gather in your homes to celebrate the holiday. christmas is a time of joy and peace, and we hope the holiday season brings all of you happy reunions with families and friends, and time to rest and reflect as you look forward to a new year. at christmas, we give thanks for the gift of the birth of christ, and for the blessings that surround us every day of the year.
in this great and prosperous land, we have so much to be thankful for, and christmas reminds us of our obligation to share these blessings with others. there are many among us who are hurting and require a helping hand. in the new year, i hope americans will look for ways to volunteer your time and talents where they are needed most. by reaching out to a neighbor in need, we make our nation a more just and compassionate place.
this christmas, we remember our fellow citizens who suffered from the hurricanes and other disasters that struck our nation this past year. we pray for their strength as they continue to recover and rebuild their lives and their communities.
during the holiday season and throughout the year, we think with pride of the men and women of our armed forces, who are keeping our nation safe and defending freedom around the world.
in iraq, afghanistan, and elsewhere, they are protecting our liberty by spreading liberty to others, and all americans are grateful to our troops for their courage and commitment.
we re also grateful to their families. staying behind when a family member goes to war is a heavy burden -- and it s particularly hard at christmas. we pray for our military families; we ask almighty god to bestow his protection and care on their loved ones as they protect our nation from grave dangers.
we also remember the heroic men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation s freedom. we pray that god will comfort the loved ones they left behind. the sacrifices of these brave troops have rescued millions from lives of tyranny and sorrow, and made america more secure. we will always cherish the memory of each of our fallen servicemen and women, and count it a privilege to be citizens of the country they served.
the times we live in have brought many challenges to our country. and at such times, the story of christmas brings special comfort and confidence. christmas reminds us that we can trust in god s promise of peace on earth and goodwill toward men. on a night more than 2,000 years ago, an angel of the lord brought good tidings of great joy: the god of heaven had come to earth, and he would be with us always.
thank you for listening, and merry christmas.

i once knew someone who spent a year in a plaster cast recovering from an operation onhis back. he read a lot, and thought a lot, and felt miserable.
later, he realised this time of forced retreat from the world had helped him to understandthe world more clearly.
we all need to get the balance right between action and reflection. with so manydistractions, it is easy to forget to pause and take stock. be it through contemplation, prayer, or even keeping a diary, many have found the practice of quiet personal reflectionsurprisingly rewarding, even discovering greater spiritual depth to their lives.
reflection can take many forms. when families and friends come together at christmas, it’soften a time for happy memories and reminiscing. our thoughts are with those we have lovedwho are no longer with us. we also remember those who through doing their duty cannot be athome for christmas, such as workers in essential or emergency services.
and especially at this time of year we think of the men and women serving overseas in ourarmed forces. we are forever grateful to all those who put themselves at risk to keep us safe.
service and duty are not just the guiding principles of yesteryear; they have an enduringvalue which spans the generations.
i myself had cause to reflect this year, at westminster abbey, on my own pledge ofservice made in that great church on coronation day si_ty years earlier.
the anniversary reminded me of the remarkable changes that have occurred since thecoronation, many of them for the better; and of the things that have remained constant, suchas the importance of family, friendship and good neighbourliness.
but reflection is not just about looking back. i and many others are looking forward to thecommonwealth games in glasgow ne_t year.
the baton relay left london in october and is now the other side of the world, on its wayacross seventy nations and territories before arriving in scotland ne_t summer. its journey is areminder that the commonwealth can offer us a fresh view of life.
my son charles summed this up at the recent meeting in sri lanka. he spoke of thecommonwealth’s “family ties” that are a source of encouragement to many. like any familythere can be differences of opinion. but however strongly they’re e_pressed they are heldwithin the common bond of friendship and shared e_periences.
here at home my own family is a little larger this christmas.
as so many of you will know, the arrival of a baby gives everyone the chance tocontemplate the future with renewed happiness and hope. for the new parents, life will neverbe quite the same again!
as with all who are christened, george was baptised into a joyful faith of christian dutyand service. after the christening, we gathered for the traditional photograph.
it was a happy occasion, bringing together four generations.
in the year ahead, i hope you will have time to pause for moments of quiet reflection. asthe man in the plaster cast discovered, the results can sometimes be surprising.
for christians, as for all people of faith, reflection, meditation and prayer help us torenew ourselves in god’s love, as we strive daily to become better people. the christmasmessage shows us that this love is for everyone. there is no one beyond its reach.
on the first christmas, in the fields above bethlehem, as they sat in the cold of nightwatching their resting sheep, the local shepherds must have had no shortage of time forreflection. suddenly all this was to change. these humble shepherds were the first to hearand ponder the wondrous news of the birth of christ - the first noel - the joy of which wecelebrate today.
i wish you all a very happy christmas.

it was one of the last days before christmas, and the as sistants in the large store had their hands full serving eager christmas shoppers.
at one counter an old lady was choosing gloves red ones for her daugher in law, light blue ones for her niece, pink ones for her grand daughter, green ones for her sister and by the time she had found what she wanted, the counter was covered with pairs of all colors and sizes.
when the salesgirl had finally written out the bill and was about to turn to the ne_t customer with a tired voice. the feast of christmas
it is not easy to pin-point the origins of the christmas feast, today the more important feast of the christmas season in most western christian churches. one can only say for certain that the birth of jesus christ was being celebrated in rome by the year 336 a.d.; afterwards the feast was celebrated in other christian churches throughout the world.
why it was celebrated on december 25th is another question. no date for the birth of jesus can be found in the new testament, which is concerned more with the question "who is jesus?" than the date of his birth. early christian speculation about his birth date was influenced by the symbolism of the changing seasons, then popular in religious thought, which paid careful attention to the equino_es and solstices of the sun. christian scholars speculated that jesus was conceived at the spring equino_ (march 25th) and therefore was born on december 25th, the date of the winter solstice.
in many of the christian churches, march 25th is still the feast of the annunciation, when the angel gabriel announced to mary that she was to be the mother of jesus.
possible impluse for the feast of christmas may have came too from the establishment of the pagan feast of the "unconquered sun-god" by the emperor aurelian in 274 a.d. to be celebrated on december 25, the day of the winter solstice in rome and throughout the empire. in response, christians could celebrate the feast of the "sun of righteousness" (malachi 4,2), jesus christ, who called himself " the light of the world."

the word"chrismas" is derived from the word "christ mass" the celebration of the birth of jesus christ. now we are gonging to talk about some traditional customs in the western countries. people usually place a christmas tree, wich is decorated with colorful lights sweets and gifts,in their living rooms at christmas.in northern europe, the trees that remained green throughout the year were worshipped as symbols of eternal life.it is said that mistletoe, hung up as a christmas decoration, allow you to kiwhoever you like underneath it.a tele tells that balder the sun god,was killed by an arrow of mistletoe made by the god of evil ,loki.balder, however, was bought back to life, and the mistletoe was told never to harmbalder again.perhaps for this reason the mistletoe become a symbol of love and reconciliation. good evening , ladies and gentlemen . i am joy and glad to give you a speech about stre, yes , just the topic you see on the screen. psychologist tell us that streis a state of worry caused by the problem of living , such as too much work or study , heavy responsibilities , and quickened pace of life . statistics show that strecomes from every detail in our life . financial problems , poor health , being laid off may be the strethat most adults now suffering . as students in the university , we are also under our special stre. while study , having to take various tests and submit a project against a deadline may put a great pressure on us . and the things make us felt stressed may be our parents’s greater e_pectations on us than we could reach . later , when we are likely to graduate , some other problems will also annoy us . i think we will worry a lot about our ability to compete in the job market and how we can best use what we’ve learned at college in our future job . the chief problem we should face to is our atitude towards stre.people usually say they can not live in the sun e_cept they escape from stre. it’s unwelcome ! yes , however , very necessary . just image a world where stredoes not e_ist and people lead their life in a very comfortable way . but is this kind of living condition as perfect as we hope ? without stre, they may feel very satisfied with the current life but lack of power to discover new things . too much satisfaction result in nothing e_cept a countermarch of the society . no stre, no development . so a certain amount of streis good . it can stimulate us and increase our level of alertne. and our answer to streis another vital problem . how to do with ourselves when stresuddenly break into our life ? to wave the white flag and admit our unability , to give up to our ideality , or worstly , just to suicide as to put an end to everything … of cause not . the principle is to tackle with stregentlely and harmoniously. we should try our best to release ourselves . such as to do some e_ercise , to linsen to traditional chinese music or classical music to ease our minds and to learn to view these changes of life as challenges .it’s no use crying over spilt milk . only to accept what has happened can solve the problem .

the president: hello everybody, and happy holidays.
the first lady: we know how busy this time of year is for everyone, so we’re not going totake much of your time.
but we did want to take a moment to wish you all a merry christmas, from our family to yours.
the president: this is a season for millions of americans to be together with family, tocontinue long-held holiday traditions, and to show our gratitude to those we love. and alongthe way, some of us might even watch a little basketball or eat some christmas cookies, too.
the first lady: here at the white house, over the past few weeks, we’ve had about 70,000people from all across the country come visit us and look at our holiday decorations.
this year’s theme was “gather around: stories of the season.”
and in every room of the house, we tried to tell a story about who we are as americans and howwe celebrate the holidays together.
and we made certain to highlight some of the most powerful stories we know—the stories ofour outstanding troops, veterans, and military families and their service and sacrifice for ourcountry.
the president: our e_traordinary men and women in uniform are serving so that therest of us can enjoy the blessings we cherish during the holidays. but that means many of ourtroops are far from home and far from family. they’re spending some e_tra time on the phonewith their loved ones back home. or they’re setting up video chats so they can watch as thepresents are opened. so today, we want all of our troops to know that you’re in our thoughtsand prayers this holiday season.
and here’s the good news: for many of our troops and newest veterans, this might be the firsttime in years that they’ve been with their families on christmas. in fact, with the iraq war overand the transition in afghanistan, fewer of our men and women in uniform are deployed inharm’s way than at any time in the last decade.
the first lady: and that’s something we all can be thankful for.
and with more and more of our troops back here at home, now it’s our turn to serve—it’s ourturn to step up and show our gratitude for the military families who have given us so much.
and that’s why jill biden and i started our joining forces initiative—to rally all americans tosupport our military families in ways large and small.
and again and again, we have been overwhelmed by the response we’ve gotten as folks fromacross the country have found new ways to give back to these families through their schools, businesses, and houses of worship.
the president: that’s the same spirit of giving that connects all of us during the holidays.so many people all across the country are helping out at soup kitchens, buying gifts for childrenin need, or organizing food or clothing drives for their neighbors. for families like ours, thatservice is a chance to celebrate the birth of christ and live out what he taught us – to love ourneighbors as we would ourselves; to feed the hungry and look after the sick; to be our brother’skeeper and our sister’s keeper. and for all of us as americans, regardless of our faith, those arevalues that can drive us to be better parents and friends, better neighbors and better citizens.
the first lady: so as we look to the new year, let’s pledge ourselves to living out thosevalues by reaching out and lifting up those in our communities who could use a hand up.
the president: so merry christmas, everyone. and from the two of us, as well as malia, sasha, grandma, bo…
the first lady: and sunny, the newest obama.
the president: we wish you all a blessed and safe holiday season.
the first lady: happy holidays everybody, and god bless.
